FENTON

The Fenton Art Glass Company began in 1905 in its glass decorating shop in Martins Ferry, Ohio in and old abandoned factory rented by Frank Fenton and his brother John.
John Fenton later went on to found the now famous Millersburg Glass Company.
After raising financial backing and talented glass workers, construction began on their own plant in Williamstown, West Virginia where production began in 1907.
This was the start of a business that is still in production till this day.
In 1908 friction arose between Frank and John, it was then that John set up his Millersburg Glass Company.
By this time Fenton’s iridized glass had taken the market by storm and carnival glass was on its way.
Fenton continued to produce beautiful carnival glass patterns over the next 15 years and their now famous iridized of glass was exported all over the world.
By the time the demand for carnival glass began to wane Fenton had produced almost 150 patterns in carnival glass alone as well has other types of glass i.e., custard glass, mosaic inlaid glass, stretch glass, opalescent glass but none of these compared to the production of carnival glass.
Fenton is still producing glass today all be it in a much more limited way and their iridized glass is just a popular now as it was in the peak production period in the early 1900’s.
Fenton made life much easier for the collectors of their carnival glass by marking the later patterns with the oval Fenton logo.
Probably one of the most common patterns to find in Australia would be Peacock and Grape, Vintage, Grape and Cable, Stag and Holly, Holly and Butterfly and Berry, yet patterns such as Rose Show, Poppy Show, Peacock and Urn are very hard to find, and many that are in collections have been sourced from the USA via the internet.
